Sunday, April 28, 2024 This is a wonderful easy, sometimes breezy, walk along the lower road of Dundarave, West Bay and Altamont neighborhoods. You will encounter beautiful scenery, huge cedars, lovely lavish gardens, quaint tucked-away beaches and architecturally-renowned mansions. The very interesting Flight Path Park, which has an aeronautical theme, is located near the secluded historical village of Burkeville. Saturday, May 4, 2024 Enjoy walking the Arbutus Greenway, Marpole neighbourhoods and along the extensive boardwalk beside the Fraser River, where salt and freshwater meet as the Fraser meets the Pacific Ocean. Beautiful views of the Fraser River from the boardwalks that cross restored tidal marshes and snake between stands of poplar and alder trees. Barges, boats and log booms on the river and the Vancouver Airport runways are just beyond. This part of the walk is the highlight and not to be missed. This walk includes 4 Tsawwassen Neighborhoods, First Nations land, and the largest blue heron rookery in B.C. The neighborhoods include: Seaside (built 2020), Tsawwassen Springs (built 2010 to 2020), Imperial Village (1990’s), Candlewyck (1970’S/80’s). The Tsatsu rookery is particularly active between February and May each year. This walk also features a small walkway adjacent to an organic farm and some bee hives. Check out the crops on offer this year (usually potatoes or cabbages) but beware of manure smells in May – it is “organic” after all! Note: There are two 5K routes. (i) Starts at the South Delta Recreation Centre - does not go to the rookery (ii) Register at the South Delta Recreation Centre, then drive to Pat Quinn's. Then to the north side of Lost Lagoon. Check out the Rhododendron Garden and the Blue Heron Colony, one of the largest urban colony in North America. Pass English Bay and the Inukshuk. Walk along the Spirit Trail, then through Mosquito Creek Park to Edgemont Village, a quaint little area with one-of-a-kind retail stores and a vibrant community. You might feel like you are in a mountain resort as Grouse Mountain is not far away. Then down to a 1950’s cabin and pond where a number of shows, including the Virgin River series, were filmed. Enjoy great views of Vancouver harbour and downtown, the North Shore mountains and English Bay. Walking the seawall clockwise we are rewarded with views of Brockton Point Lighthouse, the Lady in a Wetsuit statue, Lions Gate Bridge, Siwash Rock, ships at anchor in the harbour, the Sylvia Hotel and the NEW Laughing Men statues. There are two 5K route options: (i) walk mostly on the east side of the Seawall and back via the Rose Garden (ii) walk on trails to Beaver Lake, the Aquarium and back via the Seawall. We pass the very historic home of one of the original Steveston pioneers and then head back to the West Dyke. The variety of birds that you will get to see while walking on the dykes is amazing. Come Walk With Us and explore Minoru Park (very nice park) and some quiet residential neighbourhoods on our way to the Middle Arm Dyke system that protects the city of Richmond. This part of the dyke pathway is amazing, looking over to the airport, watching planes leave and arrive, very often getting to see row boats, dragon boats or sculls in the Fraser River, walking past the Richmond Oval, and the UBC Boathouse which is a fully floating facility.
